About this restaurant

Housed in a former theatre, Catch opened in 2002 offering uncomplicated Californian cuisine in a stylish setting. The restaurant features an enclosed patio with a circular fireplace and is in the heart of the Castro district which has since the 1960s attracted the city's large gay community. The same building once housed Castro Camera from where aspiring gay politician Harvey Milk had his campaign headquarters. Milk was th first openly gay man to be elected to public office in San Francisco when he was elected to the Board of Supervisors and became a symbol of gay rights when he was murdered along with Mayor George Moscone in City Hall in 1978. His life story was later turned into a film "Milk" starring Sean Penn. Catch promises fresh affordable seafood under the supervision of chef Jeremiah Guerra from El Salvador. Two fish courses: about $35. Four stars on Google.

They say...

Catch serves fresh, affordable seafood and landfare in a casual, cozy atmosphere. Since opening in October 2002, Catch has drawn a large following and is the perfect place to gather for every occasion - cocktails and appetizers at the bar, a cozy romantic dinner for two by the fireplace on the heated patio, or a birthday dinner celebration.... Our famous resident chef has designed a menu which highlights the freshest seafood and the best produce of the season in a clean, uncomplicated Californian style with subtle Mediterranean influences......

We say...

This is a restaurant with a fascinating history inextricably linked with San Francisco's gay community. Although promising the freshest local seafood Catch doesn't have much to say about sustainability and we are given no idea online about its sourcing policies. So we have no idea where the salmon comes from - whether it is Pacific or Atlantic, farmed or wild - and the ahi (yellowfin) tuna might be ok if it is line caught but not if it is longline. Similarly unspecified 'tuna', mixed grill of 'fish' , 'fish and chips' and 'seafood stew' doesn't offer a lot if information to diners. The sea bass, sole and sea bream are also anonymous. More information please,,,,,,, A one Red Fish restaurant.
