About this restaurant

Sister restaurant to the Rivington Grill in Greenwich (and also part of Caprice Holdings), the aesthetic is Hackney Cool. High ceilings, large windows, neon art-works and a touch of post-industrial warehouse makes a buzzing backdrop for a seasonal, British menu.

They make a pretty mean breakfast here: try boiled duck’s egg and soldiers, bacon sarnies or buttered Manx kippers. An all day bar menu features soft herring roes on toast and Welsh rarebits, or you can take away fish and chips with mushy peas. There’s a choice of oysters (£15.50 with a glass of bubbly) or grilled sardines with herbs and garlic butter (£6.25) for starters. Main courses include Devon red chicken with sage, onion and liver stuffing, whole seabass with wild cabbage and brown shrimps (£17.50) and slow-cooked lamb Henry with kale and based neeps (£16.75). Puddings have the comfort factor: blackberry buttermilk pudding and spotted dick and custard.

Monday-Friday there are daily specials (£13.50) such as the ever-popular Rivington fish pie on Fridays, and there is a fine three-course Sunday set lunch for £22.50. All wines by the glass are available in 125ml measures as well as the standard serving of 175ml. There’s also a good choice by the carafe.

Our fish are responsibly caught from sustainable sources.

We say...

Rivington Grill is part of Caprice Holdings, a group we congratulate for taking seriously the question of fish sustainability. We also like the fact they identify most of the fish on the menu, and that when farmed it comes from reputable sources. Virtually all the fish and shellfish is virtually all from Great Britain: Native lobster, for example, could only too easily have come from North America stocks which are cheaper and inferior (in our judgement).

They also get praise for presenting less used species in interesting ways - such as the sardines mentioned above, or Newlyn scallops prepared with bacon and sea purslane. They well deserve this exceptionally high Fish2Fork rating.
